The Inbetweenie: Sit down, fashion, we need to talk

You’re not exactly friendly to the big girls anyway, so this almost feels like asking the KKK to stop using the N-word, but let’s try it anyway.

Plus-sized women more or less have the same aesthetic as straight-sized women. I like simple black dresses, unembellished skirts, good basics, classic colors. All of that. So why on earth are most plus-sized fashions tacky monstrosities?

Let’s take a look at Forever 21.

Here are a selection of straight sized dresses:

It has the usual impossibly tacky gear the F21 carries generally, but a few classic, work appropriate pieces as well.

And now the Plus sizes:

Loud prints, shiny fabrics and not damn thing you could wear to work.

Why isn’t that cute little orange dress in the straight sizes available in a plus size? Why go through the trouble of making whole new dresses just for a different size range? Why not offer the same shit in expanded sizes? WHY?!

And a quick perusal of other sites offering plus-sized fashions within a certain price range will yield similar results.

In order to get work-appropriate basics, you have to go up in your price range. And since for some of us, Old Navy at full price is still kinda high, this really fucking sucks.

In short, Fat women like the same clothes straight-sized women like. So please, just make the cute shit in our size.

This. Not all fat women spend their lives a) at home b) in tacky reggaeton nightclubs. Pretty clothes or GTFO.

PREACH

Seriously! Only once have I ever found a top I wanted in the Forever 21 straight size section also available in the plus section. (You’d better believe I bought it immediately.) I don’t want animal prints or lame or things that make me look like a disco ball. I want cute fitted tops. I want dresses with nipped waists and intricate detailing. Why is this so hard to understand?

+1 Finding work-appropriate clothing for fat women is damn near impossible.

ARG, THIS TIMES ELEVEN.  AND CAN WE UNDERSTAND THAT “SIZING UP” SHOULD NOT INCLUDE MAKING THE NECKLINE THE SIZE OF GREENLAND!?  YES, fatladies have boobs, but NOT. ALL. OF. US. and NOT ALL OF THE LADIES WITH BOOBS WANT TO BE FLASHING THEM ALL THE TIME.  Yeah, I know, got ‘em, flaunt ‘em, BUT NOT WHEN YOU HAVE A CONSERVATIVE JOB, OKAY?

This is so timely because I perused fatties21 yesterday to see if I could find an el cheapo dress to take with me on a trip. I was thinking something casual for wandering San Francisco, not dropping it like its hot for some change. FAIL. Ol tacky bullshit. Its a shame because I bought some really cute stuff there this summer (some adorable sun dresses. Their tops remain ridiculous) and I thought maybe things were looking up. I would never make F21 my main clothing source (probably because I’m too old for that shit) but I always hoped it would be a good place to get “fun” clothes that I didn’t care too much about. Which is what everyone else goes there for.

I would be ok with a neutral animal print in a non-shiny fabric, perferably cotton or at least a cotton blend as long as the fit was right… not something with big flappy weird sleeves or a strapless monstrosity.
